How long does it take to recharge the battery of an electric automobile?

That depends on battery capacity. Considering a battery of 20kWh, thanks to the SCAME recharging columns you can “fill up“ your car in about 1 hour, using a 32 A recharging column on a three-phase system. Recharging at home with single-phase 16 A current requires 4-6 hours of recharging time.

What is the cost of maintaining an electric car?

Considering a cost of electricity for the recharge of 0.20 €/kWh , and a cost of diesel fuel of 1.5€/l, for an automobile that travels 15,000 km/year the costs are as follows:

  • Car running on diesel fuel = 1350 €/year
  • Electric car of equivalent size = 375 €/year

What is the average autonomy of an electric car?

An average-size electric car has an autonomy of 150-160 km; if we consider that 70% of automobiles circulating in Europe travel an average of 60 km a day (CIVES data), we can see that electric cars fully satisfy the needs of European motorists.

What do regulations require on the subject of electric mobility?

Mandate 468 issued by the European Commission sets the terms within which unified standards must be adopted at the European Level. SCAME participates in Italian and international technical committees for the definition of standards on electric mobility. This allows us to constantly monitor the legislative changes underway, and to design and make products that comply with applicable regulations.

The term stands for a communication between automobile and recharging station that guarantees safe recharging and is able to deal with any energy absorption phenomena.

How is it possible to integrate electric mobility into the smart-grid system?

So that electric mobility can be integrated into the smart grid, a dedicated connection system is needed that, in addition to transporting energy, allows communication between vehicle and recharging station. Complete integration with the smart grid will then require the ability of the network to take energy from batteries (vehicle to grid communication), with the connection system being pre-set for two-way energy transfer.

How and when can I use the SCAME recharging column?

SCAME offers a complete solution for the recharging of electric vehicles. The recharging systems designed and developed by SCAME can be used to recharge batteries of not only electric vehicles such as cars, but also scooters and motorcycles in both private homes (one-family and condominiums), and in the car parks of public and private areas such as shopping malls or company car parks.

How does the SCAME recharging station work?

The SCAME recharging station supplies energy to users through dedicated connectors that comply with the aforementioned regulations. One of the additional recharging solutions offered by SCAME features an RFID - Mi Fare recognition system with monitoring and management software for user authorization. Recharging can be carried out after proper identification through the use of a special smart card.

Can a scooter or light vehicle equipped with a simple domestic plug (for example, a Schuko plug) be recharged from a recharging station for electric vehicles?

It is not possible to recharge a scooter (or light vehicle) equipped with a simple domestic plug from a recharging infrastructure; however, it is very easy to change the vehicle so that it can be recharged from such infrastructure. The following operations must be carried out:

  • Replace the power supply cable and the plug (with a 3 A type connector) and cable equipped with pilot connector)
  • Fit the control resistance between the scooter frame and the pilot conductor (Mode 3 simplified)
These operations can be carried out by the vehicle manufacturer or by a car electrician, and they cost less than 50 Euros euro.

Why is it impossible recharge the battery of an electric vehicle from traditional domestic outlets?

Because international standards require intelligent communication between vehicle and network. The SCAME recharging column complies with standards IEC 61851-1 and IEC 62196-2.
In private places such as one’s garage, Recharging Mode 1 is allowed: the electric vehicle is connected to the mains in alternate current by means of domestic connectors up to 16 A.
For public places, on the other hand, the standards requires Recharging Mode 3, which entails the use of a specific outlet on a dedicated circuit, to ensure the highest level of safety for the users while recharging vehicles.

Why are there two vehicle recharging modes, in other words 230V AC - 16A or 400V AC – 32A?

The 16 A outlet (SCAME 3A plug) is used to recharge small vehicles with single-phase supply, while the 32 A version (SCAME 3C plug) is used to recharge vehicles that need greater absorption during the recharging phase and with a three-phase + neutral or single-phase supply.

Which electric automobiles can be recharged with a SCAME recharging column?

All vehicles equipped with plugs that comply with international standards provided for by European Regulations IEC 61851-1 and 62196-2.

How many vehicles can be recharged at the same time from one SCAME recharging column?

Up to 2 vehicles can be recharged at the same time, however SCAME can develop personalized solutions for the recharging of more than two vehicles.

Can the batteries of electric scooters or bikes also be recharged from a SCAME recharging station?

If these vehicles are fitted with a recharging plug in compliance with standards IEC 62196-1 and 2 they can be recharged, otherwise, if they are fitted with a simple domestic plug they can only be recharged in a domestic environment according to Mode 1, in compliance with standard IEC 61851-1.

Can the electric vehicle be recharged from the house meter?

Theoretically, you can recharge your vehicle from your home meter, but during the recharging process all the available power is absorbed by the vehicle, so you cannot operate at the same time other home appliances such as: washing machine, dishwasher, electrical oven, etc. With Resolution of 19 April 2010 – (No. ARG/elt 56/10 AEEG - Authority for Energy and Gas,) has made it possible for private users to request the installation of a specific meter for the recharging of electric vehicles.
Users can request the following powers: 3, 6, 10, 30, 50 KW, and the cost of energy depends on consumption. The more you consume, the lower the cost per kWh. For example, the average annual consumption of an electric vehicle can be 2400 kWh, 15,000 km/year, for an annual cost of approximately 620 €.

Can the electrical consumption be measured?

The software included in the SCAME recharging station processes all utilization statistics for each user, such as: energy absorbed, recharging time, number of recharges carried out, etc.

How is safety guaranteed during the recharging process?

Safety during the recharging phase is guaranteed by an electronic device that interfaces with the vehicle. Other devices are also available for control and protection against overcurrents and direct and indirect contacts.

In order to install a recharging system, what are the technical and/or infrastructural requirements that I have to plan for in my project?

In order to install a proper recharging system, you have to plan for power supply through cables with suitable sections, and the brickwork where these cables will be installed. You can ask your energy provider to supply you with a specific meter for the recharging of electric vehicles with installed power suited to the user’s needs.

Are there any differences when installing a residential system rather than a commercial one?

There are no differences, aside from the civil and electrical jobs needed to connect the recharging stations.
For domestic installations, a normal home meter can be used to recharge vehicles.
For public installation, a specific meter is needed for the power supply of the recharging columns.

Can the recharging column be supplied through a photovoltaic system?

Yes it can, however the photovoltaic system must nevertheless be preset for the “onsite exchange" of the energy produced, through the accumulation of energy in special batteries. This is because it is not possible to supply the recharging column directly with the energy produced by the photovoltaic system, as it would be impossible to guarantee a continuous recharging service.

Is fast recharging always possible?

Recharging columns supplied in three-phase alternate current up to 32 A provide a semi-fast recharging, in other words with average recharging times of 1-3 hours. The so-called fast recharging, in other words recharging in 5 minutes up to 80% of battery capacity, are possible only with recharge stations supplied in direct current, which require high installed powers. Such stations will be located only at service stations or special recharging stations.
