From oil to electricity

We all saw the damage caused by the oil platform problems in the United States last summer. They certainly weren't the first and, sadly, they won't be the last.

The oil companies claimed that they would bear all the costs for the damage. This is all well and good, but these costs will no doubt raise the price of oil and its derivatives and it is the consumer who will end up paying for this damage.

It is therefore no surprise that the way is being cleared for a new, alternative technology for transporting people .

A new solution

We are talking about the electric car, hybrid or otherwise, which is beginning to establish a foothold as the problems caused by oil extraction are becoming more evident (and the rise in prices equally evident).

One of the biggest problems facing the rapid uptake by the mass market of this mode of transport, which in fact is not new, is the lack of charging stations.

But we are getting there.

Scame, for example, is offering the LIBERA Series of connectors and panels specifically designed for electric vehicles .

Regulatory bodies are also starting to respond,
with standards such as :

  • the CEI 69-6 (italian standard)
    Standards for plugs and socket-outlets for connecting electric road vehicles to the power supply;
  • the EN 60309-2 (european standard)
    Plugs, socket-outlets and couplers for industrial purposes
    Part 2: Dimensional interchangeability requirements for pin and contact-tube accessories;
  • the CEI 69-2, 3, 4 and 5 (italian standard)
    Conductive recharging of electric vehicles.

But where do we find these charging stations?
More and more public charging stations are being installed,
and you can even use your own mains supply at home.

How do we pay for it ?

Special forms of payment - which use current communication technology, of course - are being envisaged for public charging stations.

For example, Scame has developed an innovative vehicle charging management and control system for the LIBERA Series which ensures that service is only delivered to authorised users.

The system uses RFID technology (Scame's UB1 and UB2 PERSONAL modules), which requires connection.

The control system also offers a significant degree of safety: there is no voltage at the outlet until the authorised person has been recognised.

Unambiguous user identification is an ideal method for supplying electricity, even in a public environment.

Another safety feature is the "Safe-In" device, in which the contact tubes are closed by means of a special switch, thus preventing accidental or voluntary contact with the live parts.

And last but not least, there is a "pilot contact", or an extra contact, which creates a circuit to check the integrity of the protective earth conductor whilst the vehicle is charging in a public environment.
