Products intended for use in
explosive atmospheres [ATEX]

This document is a simple guide to the ATEX European Directive, its meaning and how to choose the best products for your application.

What is ATEX?

ATEX is a European Directive (94/9/EC) on products intended for use in an explosive atmosphere.

The ATEX directive has been effective throughout the European Union since 1 July 2003, replacing the various existing national and European legislations regarding explosive atmospheres.

ATEX = " AT mosphere EX plosive"

Why ATEX ?

A potentially explosive atmosphere is defined as an environment which, in normal operating conditions and/or under environmental influence, can transform into an explosive atmosphere.

The products covered by the 94/9/EC Directive are defined as products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Directive 94/9/EC defines an explosive atmosphere as a mixture of:

  1. flammable gases, vapours, mists or dusts
  2. with air
  3. under specific atmospheric conditions
  4. in which, after ignition has occurred, combustion propagates to the flammable mixture

Harmonised European ATEX standard

The European Union has adopted two harmonised directives on health and safety, known as ATEX 100a and ATEX 137.

The ATEX 100a Directive (94/9/EC) sets out the minimum safety requirements for products intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres in Member States of the European Union.

The ATEX 137 Directive (99/92/EC) instead defines the minimal requirements for health and safety at the workplace, working conditions and the handling of products and materials in potentially explosive atmospheres.
This directive divides the workplace into zones and specifies the criteria to be used for classifying these zones.

The ATEX 94/9/EC Directive was implemented in Italy with Legislative Decree 126/98 (Official Gazette No.101 04/05/98) and applies to products placed on the market after 1 July 2003.

The ATEX 99/92/EC Directive was implemented in Italy with Legislative Decree 233/98 (Official Gazette No.197 26/08/03) and came into effect on 10 September 2003.
