Are you connected?

In the grand scheme of things, a connector is a “lowly” but oft-underestimated item in the entire electrical system for sure.

After all, it is just an object that puts two conductors into contact with each other.

Well go and have a look at the IEC or CENELEC website and see how many rules and regulations there are for connectors.

There are about one hundred in all, with half of them aimed at terminals alone.
A lot of reading material if you feel so inclined.

If you don’t already know, you can find out why and how to use round terminal boards with screw terminals for MMC electrical boxes and cable junctions.

Or you can learn all about how to identify terminals and their numbers (EN 60445).

Without forgetting CEI 16-7 which also describes how to identify terminals and cable terminations,

whilst
EN 60947-4-1
describes how to identify terminals and the numbers and letters used in industrial equipment with a voltage no greater than 1000 Vca and 1200 Vcc

EN 60947-7-1
defines the terminals used for copper wires in low voltage auxiliary equipment.

And last but not least CEI 32-10 specifies the permissible temperature and over-temperature limits for terminals.

Standards
EN 60998-1
Connecting devices for low voltage circuits for household and similar purposes.
Part 1: General requirements

and
EN 60998-2-1
Connecting devices for low voltage circuits for household and similar purposes.
Part 2-1: Particular requirements for connecting devices as separate entities with screw-type clamping units

cover connectors for household use and similar applications.

There is even a standard (but we won’t name that one) that deals specifically with connectors for sewing machines.

As you can see, there are a great many connectors for a great many uses, including special connectors for solar panels where you have to be extremely careful at every point that could lead to a loss of energy, and the connector could be precisely one of those points.

This diversity of use has of course led to an equally diversified offering of products, and the Scame catalogue is no exception with a large section devoted to this topic alone.

You will find power supply connectors (the various HAN series) and connection devices (Connecto) of all types (movable terminals, bar terminals, multiway unipolar terminals, terminal boards), etc.

In short, the terminal can be considered an important part of the electrical system. It won’t take long to find out what you need to know if you “connect” to the right catalogue and leaf through it!
